A crowd of 6000 fans turned out in Newtownshandrum to honour the Cork hurlers home.

The team arrived in the hurling stronghold just after 9pm on Tuesday night, 14th September. They were led by Cork captain Ben O'Connor, and fellow Newtownshandrum and Cork hurlers, James Bowles, John Paul King, Paul Morrissey, Pat Mulcahy and Ben's brother Jerry.

The men were also members of the Newtownshandrum team which won the All-Ireland club final in March this year.

A bonfire burns to welcome the Cork team as Newtown's Ben O'Connor and Paul Morrissey bring the Liam McCarthy cup to the village on Tuesday, 14th September.

Local man Patsy Morrissey, who is a selector with the Cork team, was also given a hero's welcome.

Patsy said: "There was a fireworks display somewhere near the village. The party is probably stil going on!" he said.

Among those who spoke at the homecoming were Ben O'Connor; county mayor, Cllr Paddy Sheehan; club chairman, Christy Morrissey; county board chairman, Jim Forbes, and club president, Fr Brendan Wrixon.

Cllr Sheehan presented Ben O'Connor with a crystal vase in honour of the occasion.
